Ray Edward Herb, 77, of Sunbury, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2021, at Geisinger Medical Center.
He was born May 5, 1943, in Sunbury, a son to the late Edward and Dorothy (Fetter) Herb (Bailor). Later he became a bonus son to the late Harry Bailor.
Ray served in the National Guard and retired from U.S. Army Reserve.
He was a lifetime member of the East End Hose Company and member of the Senior Action Center, both in Sunbury.
One of his earlier jobs was at the Mandata Poultry Company, where he was able to earn enough to buy his first car which was only the beginning of his love for cars. His list of cars over his lifetime amounted to 40 plus.
He then worked for several years at the Sunbury Silk Mill followed by 40 plus years at Weis Markets from where he retired.
Surviving are a daughter, Holly (Brian) Miller; and grandchildren, Zach and Zoe; his longtime, devoted, beloved companion, Yvonne Koble; two sisters, Mary (Harold) Spangler and Darlene Herb; brother, Larry (Diane) Bailor; very faithful friend from his high school days at Mahanoy Joint (graduated class 1961), Charlie Brown; several nieces, great nieces/nephews, aunts, uncle, and cousins; special buddies, Peanut and Lucy.
Ray made numerous friends and acquaintances throughout the Valley due to his love of eating out many times per week with Yvonne.
He always had a great love for animals. During his formative years, most photos of him included his current best friend, a dog. However, his love of animals was not limited to dogs. At one point, he was obsessed with raising rabbits.
Ray also enjoyed watching old Westerns on TV, listening to country music, doing woodworking, collecting ducks/toy trucks and was very interested in genealogy.
Anyone who knew Ray was well aware of his great love of ice cream. Time stopped when ice cream was being served. His favorite flavor was likely a result of his spending some of his teenage summers in the strawberry fields picking those delicious, juicy berries. When you enjoy some strawberry ice cream, remember Ray fondly and the good-hearted guy he was. He will be truly missed by all.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the Geisinger Trauma ICU staff for the excellent, compassionate care provided to Ray over the past few weeks.
Services and burial arrangements will be private with the family at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mostly Mutts or Haven Ministry in Sunbury.
Arrangements are by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
