Alabama men’s basketball forward Herb Jones on Tuesday was named a finalist for the Naismith national defensive player of the year award.

The other three finalists are Baylor’s Davion Mitchell, USC’s Evan Mobley and Utah State’s Neemias Queta.

The winner will be announced April 4, along with the Naismith coach of the year. Alabama’s Nate Oats is one of four finalists for that honor.

The defensive player of the year trophy has been given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club since 2018 along with the longstanding Naismith player of the year award. Jones was a semifinalist for player of the year but not among the four finalists.

Jones, a senior from Greensboro, is averaging team highs in rebounds (6.5 per game), assists (3.4), steals (1.8) and blocks (1.1) along with a career high 11.3 points per game.
