After the 11th 3-pointer, a ridiculous shot from 25 feet that beat the third-quarter buzzer, Bob Birmingham shrugged in disbelief.
Berks Catholic’s coach knew he was watching a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
“I’ve never seen shooting like that before,” Birmingham said. “I’ve been here 32 years. I’ve never seen it.”
Caraline Herb made 12-of-15 3-pointers and scored a career-high 38 points to help Berks Catholic defeat Reading High 64-36 at Wolf Gymnasium Thursday night.
It was a Berks record for 3-pointers in a game and the highest point total in the league this season.
Herb kept firing and kept hitting.
“I was just shooting,” she said. “They kept leaving me open. They just went in.”
It became apparent midway through the second quarter that the 5-7 sophomore guard was headed for a career night. It soon became historic.
Herb was 7-for-8 on her 3-pointers and had 23 points after 12:30. She made three 3s in the first quarter, four in the second and four in the third.
On the few occasions that Herb missed, there was an audible groan from the parents in the stands. They were counting the 3s as they came.
“She’s so humble about it,” Birmingham said. “There were probably times she was open and didn’t take it. Her teammates are starting to yell at her to shoot the ball.”
Herb wasn’t aware of her total until she reached the classroom Berks Catholic uses as a locker room. She never counts her points or her baskets during a game.
Sarah Painton, the only senior in Berks Catholic’s starting lineup, watched in disbelief like everyone else.
“It was insane,” Painton said. “She kept knocking them down. In the second half I was like, ‘Gosh, I don’t even have to go for the rebound.’ ”
Herb was already regarded as one of the county’s top outside shooters before this display. She made 40 3-pointers as a freshman and led the league with 24 entering Thursday.
If she’s left alone, she’s close to automatic. The chance for an explosive scoring night was always there. She has that kind of talent. Birmingham said the sophomore never takes a bad shot.
Only eight Berks players besides Herb had made 12 3-pointers this entire season entering play Thursday. She matched that total in 28 minutes.
“Every time she shot I would stand up and make the 3 symbol,” Painton said. “It was great. She knocked them down every time.”
If Herb was by herself in the gym and took 15 3s for practice, 12 makes would be a solid total. To achieve that in a game seemed impossible.
Until it happened.
“When you’re on, you’re on,” Birmingham said. “She was on tonight. It was something special to watch.”
