Career spent working for Hoechst Roussel, Huvepharma and Chr. Hansen

Poultry scientist Dr. Herbert F. “Herb” Kling, 73, died on June 2, 2021.

Kling was born on June 7, 1947, and grew up on a family poultry farm in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelors and master’s degrees in poultry science at Penn State University and his Ph.D. in animal science from Colorado State University. His long and accomplished career as an avian scientist began with Hoechst Roussel Pharmaceuticals Inc. as a nutritional research associate. He was appointed manager of technical services and, in 1990, was named director of the poultry business unit of Hoechst Roussel Vet; he was promoted to director of scientific affairs in 1993. In 2005, he became manager of technical services for Huvepharma Inc. and, in 2009, joined Chr. Hansen Inc., where he served as technical consultant supporting probiotic usage in poultry.

Kling’s primary interests during his career focused on the research and application of intestinal health products for poultry. This included extensive work with Flavomycin (bambermycins), Gainpro (bambermycins), Safe-guard (fenbendazole) and Stenorol (halofuginone hydrobromide). As director of scientific affairs for Hoechst Roussel Vet, he supervised technical responsibilities for the launch of Sacox (salinomycin sodium), which became the leading broiler anticoccidial in the U.S. within one year. His work with Chr. Hansen Inc. involved the global launch of GalliPro Fit, one of the first multi-strain Bacillus-based probiotics for poultry.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Kling; children, Jennifer Monarchi, Rebecca (Michael) Pichetto, Christopher (Joanna) Kling; stepdaughter, Patricia Phelps; a sister; 13 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

The family requests memorial donations be made to gifts.mdanderson.org, specifying “cancer research.”
