MARTINSBURG — Hoping for blue skies and sunshine to continue into the early weeks of May, the Women’s Club of Harpers Ferry is busy preparing herbs, greenery and fresh baked goods in anticipation of its herb fair and bake sale.

Lynn Vaughn, a member of the Women’s Club of Harper’s Ferry, said the club of roughly 50 members, which has been in existence for over 100 years, aims to do a number of community-focused events out of its 856 Washington St. clubhouse and found that even as restrictions lift, outdoor activities are the safest, most effective way to ensure everyone is safe while having fun.

With this in mind, Vaughn said the group is excited to offer a wide variety of fresh greenery and homemade treats at its annual Mother’s Day weekend herb fair and bake sale.

“It’s part of our tradition to hold this herb fair and bake sale the Saturday before Mother’s Day,” Vaughn said. “It’s a way for us to celebrate women and provide the community a place to support local and buy fresh herbs, flowers and baked goods as gifts for the women in their lives or even attend the fair with the women they love. We love being able to offer a place for people to come together like this.”

Vaughn said a wide variety of plants and herbs would be available for purchase, along with a few types of flowers and veggies, in addition to fresh baked goods, including single servings of brownies and cookies, as well as cakes and pies.

Herbs and greenery to be sold fresh include: anise, cinnamon basil, bush basil, bee balm, calendula, catnip, chamomile, cilantro, Mammoth dill, fennel, lemon balm, marjoram, mint spearmint, Italian parsley, rosemary, pineapple sage, orange thyme, anise hyssop, Genovese basil, Thai basil, borage, cardoon, celery, chives, dill, eucalyptus, lavender hidcote, lemon grass, mint peppermint, Greek oregano, parsley supercurl, sage, English thyme and toothache plants.

According to Vaughn, the money raised would go toward any number of groups and programs the club supports, including local schools, fire departments, the library and the club’s scholarship fund.

Vaughn said all safety precautions would be in effect, including social distancing and masking when in close quarters.

The herb fair and bake sale will take place Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the gazebo at 555 Washington St. in Harpers Ferry.
