Basil is a great herb to have around for making pesto or pasta sauce or tossing with fresh tomatoes and mozzarella. The most popular basil variety is sweet basil (also called Genovese basil), but you can also find Thai basil, lemon basil and purple basil, which each have a unique flavor profile. All basil varieties grow best in a hot and bright location, so plant it in a sunny spot that sees at least six to eight hours of sun each day. Because basil requires high heat, it should only be planted outdoors in the summer. In the cooler months, you can also grow basil at home in a sunny South-facing windowsill. If you don't get enough sunlight in your home, try using an LED grow light.
