Move over, rutabaga. Ranunculus graces this type of farm share.
Demand for flowers from local farmers jumped last year, as the pandemic disrupted the wholesale flower supply chain, leaving grocery stores and large-scale florists mostly empty-handed. Buying direct from local Hudson Valley growers became the best option for many consumers — and that demand has carried over into increasing options for flower and herb community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares.
“People literally cried last year when they’d come to pick up flowers, saying it was the only life in their house after feeling so cooped up,” said Debra Kaye, owner of Bear Creek flower farm in Stanfordville, who mobilized a CSA for her farm last year for the first time and is excited for this year's subsequent offering. “It gives us such joy.”
