Hudson Valley flower and herb CSAs for the picking - Albany Times Union

herb.indah.link

Move over, rutabaga. Ranunculus graces this type of farm share.

Demand for flowers from local farmers jumped last year, as the pandemic disrupted the wholesale flower supply chain, leaving grocery stores and large-scale florists mostly empty-handed. Buying direct from local Hudson Valley growers became the best option for many consumers — and that demand has carried over into increasing options for flower and herb community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares.

“People literally cried last year when they’d come to pick up flowers, saying it was the only life in their house after feeling so cooped up,” said Debra Kaye, owner of Bear Creek flower farm in Stanfordville, who mobilized a CSA for her farm last year for the first time and is excited for this year's subsequent offering. “It gives us such joy.”

For a full list of CSAs available throughout the Hudson Valley, visit the Hudson Valley CSA Coalition directory, and our fresh picks for other CSAs offering fruit and vegetables, and meat shares this year.

Bear Creek Farm

Bear Creek started its CSA last year during the pandemic, and farm owner Debra Kaye said it’s now a recurring part of the farm’s operation. The farm specializes in rare and tall flowers, like heritage chrysanthemums that are 5- and 6-feet tall, and — for the first time this year — the rare Colibri Icelandic Poppy, which is taller than traditional poppies and comes in a range of pastel colors.

Pickup is available at one of three locations: 6208 Route 82, Stanfordville, NY; Bedford NY; New York City’s Union Square Market.
