Alabama basketball forward Herb Jones was named Thursday as one of 10 national semifinalists for the Naismith player of the year award.
No Tide player has ever won the award, which is given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The four finalists for the award will be announced March 16 and the winner will be named April 4.
Jones is the only SEC representative among the 10 semifinalists. The senior is averaging 11 points per game this season while leading the team in rebounds per game (6.1), assists (81), steals (45) and blocks (26).
Jones is also a semifinalist for the Naismith defensive player of the year award.
The Naismith trophy is among several prominent postseason player of the year awards in college basketball. Jones was not part of the Wooden Award’s late-season watch list released last month.
