Former Texas offensive line coach Herb Hand has been officially introduced as the next o-line coach at Charlotte. The university announced Hand's hiring Tuesday afternoon after reports surfaced last week that Hand had accepted a role on Charlotte head coach Will Healy's staff.
Charlotte officials called the addition of Hand a "home run hire" in the official press release announcing his new role with the 49ers.
"I'm so excited to be able to work with Herb Hand," Healy said of Hand in a press release Tuesday afternoon. "He has always been one of my favorites in this profession and has been an incredible mentor to me. He is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country and it says a lot about our program that we were able to make such a home run hire. He's a great coach, a great person and a great fit for our staff! Welcome to Charlotte, Hand Family!"
Hand mentioned his long-time relationship with Healy as a reason why he accepted the job on the Charlotte staff.
"My wife Deb and I are very excited about this opportunity to join the 49er Family," Hand said in the official press release. "When you're asked 'Why Charlotte?' it starts simply with Will Healy. Having known Coach Healy for the past decade, it's been incredible watching his career unfold. He did a remarkable job in presenting us with his vision for the 49er program and I'm very grateful that he is entrusting me with the leadership of the offensive line unit. We are looking forward to helping Coach Healy and the rest of the staff with the continued growth of Niner Football."
Hand was one of several former Longhorn assistant staff members who were not retained by new head coach Steve Sarkisian after he was hired to replace Tom Herman. After learning his fate with the Longhorns, Hand sent out a message thanking the players he coached during his three seasons in Austin.
“From the Hand family to the men who we have been honored to work with in Austin...Thank y'all,” Hand said in a message posted on his Twitter account. "We love you and are so appreciative for all you gave to our UNIT, the team and The University of Texas. You ALL have greatness in your future...proud to count you among ‘my guys’.”
A 30-year coaching veteran, Hand helped lead nine Longhorns to earn all-Big 12 honors after he made the move to Texas ahead of the 2018 season following two seasons spent on Gus Malzahn's staff at Auburn.
