AUSTIN — Texas offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator Herb Hand on Monday announced his departure from the program following the university’s firing of head coach Tom Herman last Saturday.

“From the Hand family to the men who we have been honored to work with in Austin...Thank y’all,” Herb tweeted. “We love you and are so appreciative for all you gave to our UNIT, the team and The University of Texas. You ALL have greatness in your future...proud to count you among ‘my guys.’”

Hand came to Austin from Auburn in 2018, replacing Derek Warehime as UT’s offensive line coach. A three-time finalist for Offensive Line Coach of the Year by Football Scoop (2008, '16-17), Hand had previous stints at Clemson, West Virginia, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and Penn State.

In 2018, all five of UT’s starting offensive lineman garnered All-Big 12 honors, led by center Zach Shackelford’s first-team recognition (AP) and second-team honors (coaches). In 2019, Shackelford and left tackle Sam Cosmi again earned All-Big 12 honors. Cosmi this season was an All-Big 12 first-team selection, and he could be selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Now Playing:

But Texas last weekend announced it had hired Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian to replace Herman. Sarkisian, who will remain with the Crimson Tide through next week’s College Football Playoff championship game, has not announced any staff hirings yet and has not confirmed whether he would retain any of Herman’s assistants.

“First and foremost here in Texas is assembling a staff,” Sarkisian said last Saturday. “So, we'll work on those things here and CDC (Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte) and I will start working our way through that and hiring the best staff in America. And then starting to forge those relationships with current players on the roster. I've already had one team meeting with them and we'll continue to meet with them separately

“And I'm planning on meeting with all of the all of the current staff members individually. In turn, we’ll start dialogues and interviews with coaches that are not on staff.”
