Amanda Ribas was sensationally stopped by Marina Rodriguez at UFC 257, but the fight was not without controversy.
The Brazilian brawlers put on an exciting contest at the Etihad Arena from Fight Island, but referee Herb Dean almost took all the headlines with his questionable officiating.
Ribas looked to apply pressure from the very first claxon, eventually securing a takedown and applying pressure from the top.
The second round began in the same vein, with Ribas chasing her taller opponent, but Rodriguez then landed a massive right hand and dropped the plucky strawweight.
Ribas, who had won four on the trot before this bout, was forced to cover up and eat shots and looked out on her feet.
Referee Dean then swooped over and looked like he was ready to call the fight, only to then back off and brush past Rodriguez – who thought he had waved it off.
She proceeded to walk away and celebrate, only for the experienced referee to tell her the fight was not over as Ribas was not quite yet out.
Unperturbed, Rodriguez then proceeded to charge back in and finish the job with a series of crushing rounds to secure an upset victory.
Ribas was stood on wobbly legs and the finish came at the perfect time, with Rodriguez celebrating her first win since outpointing Tecia Torres at UFC Uruguay in 2019.
For Ribas, the hype train is well and truly derailed as she is left to lick her wounds after her first defeat in the UFC.
