The Texas Longhorns and Tom Herman made a plethora of changes following the 2019 college football season. One of those changes did not involve Herb Hand, so should that be a topic of conversation now? Especially with Bryce Foster committing to Texas A&M.
Looking at the top-rated recruits in the state of Texas alone, the Longhorns missed out on the No. 1 prospect in the state with Tommy Brockermeyer. We have discussed at length, about him being a legacy player was a huge miss. His brother James was the No. 1 center and No. 32 prospect in the state. Both were guys that were virtual locks and they let the twins slip right through their hands.
Of the top five offensive lineman in the top 20 in the state of Texas, the Longhorns and Herb Hand went 0-5. That can’t happen. The highest rated offensive lineman to sign with Texas was Hayden Connor. A three-star composite that ranked No. 30 in his position and No. 54 in the state of Texas. The Longhorns need to aim a lot higher and unfortunately, Herb Hand won’t be the guy to get them there.
The head-scratching decision to hire Hand in the first place was just another reason the Longhorns aren’t at the level they should be. The offensive line is the one position they can’t seem to get consistent top talent. That begins and ends with Hand. While he was able to bring in top offensive line prospects at Auburn, the development wasn’t there.
An offensive line coach who can’t develop talent and is currently striking out at an epic rate when it comes to bringing these guys in. Hand is a problem and has been. However, they decided to give him a raise and a promotion to come to Austin. Another questionable decision by head coach Tom Herman was signed off on by the Board of Regents.
Much like Herman did with Todd Orlando and Tim Beck, it is time to send Herb out and find an offensive line coach who can make a difference. Otherwise, Texas A&M and the Oklahoma Sooners will continue to take the best talent and leave the rest for the Longhorns to fight for.
