STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Check your pantry before you use any spices the next time you cook.
The U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced recalls from two companies — Red Monkey Foods, Inc. and Sauer Brands Inc. — of herbs and spices that may be contaminated with salmonella.
Red Monkey Foods, Inc. is voluntarily recalling select organic parsley as part of a recall initiated by High Quality Organics after a sample was tested by a customer and was found to be potentially contaminated with salmonella. A portion of the lot recalled by High Quality Organics was supplied to Red Monkey Foods Inc., and subsequently repacked into consumer containers for parsley. It was also used to manufacture herbes de provence, which was then sold in consumer containers.
To date, there have been no consumer complaints or reported cases of salmonella in connection with these products, according to the FDA. The potentially affected products were sold to retailers across the United States.
The products recalled have “best by” dates in March 2023 and include: Cost Plus World Market Herbes De Provence, Cost Plus World Market Organic Parsley, Great Value Herbes De Provence Organic, Great Value Organic Parsley Flakes, O Organics Herbes De Provence Organic, O Organics Parsley Organic, and Full Circle Parsley Organic.
The “best by” date information can be found on the square bottom of the glass bottle. No other “best by” dates are being recalled. You can view more information about the recalled products here.
Consumers who have purchased the products with the listed “Best By” dates are urged not to consume the items, but to discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers may call the company’s Customer Service Center at 417- 319-7300 or by e-mail at customerservice@redmonkeyfoods.com for more information.
Sauer Brands Inc. is also voluntarily recalling The Spice Hunter Products due to the potential presence of salmonella, according to an FDA recall notice. After initially certifying that its raw material tested negative for salmonella, the company’s supplier notified Sauer Brands of the potential presence of salmonella in specific lots of organic parsley.
Those lots of parsley were used on two specific days in Sauer Brands Inc.'s production. It is recalling other products produced on those specific days out of an abundance of caution regarding potential cross-contamination. Sauer said it isn’t aware of any reports of illness to date related to the recalled products.
The Spice Hunter Products in question were distributed to several states, including New York. The product was produced for sale at retail and spicehunter.com. These products come in clear glass jars marked with lot codes 20217C, 20220C, 20269C and 20270C on the white field on the label.
Products recalled include: Organic Parsley, Madagascar Cloves, Saigon Organic Cinnamon, Gourmet Sesame Seeds, Herbes De Provence, Pumpkin Pie Spice, Seafood Grill & Broil, Coriander, California Garlic, Green Hatch Chile, Mexican Seasoning, Black Pepper, Paprika, Szechwan Seasoning, Fine Black Pepper, Chinese Ginger, Muntock White Pepper, Roasted Garlic, Everything Bagel Crunch, Malabar Black Peppercorns, Freeze-Dried Chives, Italian Seasoning, Cilantro, Fennel Seeds, Dill Weed, Arrowroot, and Cayenne Red Pepper.
Consumers who have purchased The Spice Hunter products on this list are urged to avoid consuming them and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Sauer Brands, Inc. at 1-800-444-3061.

According to the FDA, salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
RECENT RECALLS
Kimberly-Clark is recalling its Cottonelle Flushable Wipes and Cottonelle GentlePlus Flushable Wipes sold in the United States, due to the potential presence of bacteria, according to a recall notice on the company’s website.
The recall was made due to the detection of some flushable wipes that had the presence of a bacterium, Pluralibacter gergoviae, which occurs naturally in the environment and human body. It rarely causes serious infections in healthy individuals, however, those with a weakened immune system are at a heightened risk of infection.
The recall is limited to specific lots of the flushable wipes manufactured between Feb. 7 and Sept. 14. No other Cottonelle products are affected by the recall, and Flushable Wipes not affected are safe to use.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also alerted pet owners and veterinarians this month about certain pet food products manufactured by Sunshine Mills under several brand names that may contain unsafe levels of aflatoxin, which can cause illness and death in pets.
The alert is an expansion of a previously announced recall.
On Sept. 2, Sunshine Mills announced a recall of certain pet food products after a retail product sample was found by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry to contain an unsafe level of aflatoxin. This recall involved certain Family Pet, Heartland Farms and Paws Happy Life products.
On Oct. 8, the company expanded the recall to include additional products, which can still be on the market or in homes. This recall included certain Champ, Field Trial, Good Dog, Hunter’s Special, Old Glory, Paws Happy Life, Pet Expert, Principle, Retriever, River Bend, Sportsman’s Pride, Sprout, Thrifty, Top Runner and Whiskers & Tails products.
