PERHAM, Maine (WAGM) -

A Perham company hopes fall and winter will put people in the mood for a warm beverage. In this week’s County Ag Report, Kathy McCarty speaks with the owner of an organic herb tea business about the many varieties they have to enjoy.

A commitment to raising organic, sustainable, quality herbs, that are then turned into tea, is the cornerstone of Great North Woods Teas & Herbs, LLC. Owner and Founder Jan Grieco says her goal is to make affordable teas everyone can enjoy.

“We can turn those into teas for people who are tea fans and provide some diversity at reasonable prices. We’re not one of the huge corporate companies, we’re small, and we’re not anxious to grow. It would be nice, but we’re not anxious to grow into a big corporate company,” says Jan Grieco.

She says tea is a form of comfort food - something many of us may have enjoyed with our mothers or grandmothers. Flavors are seasonal, like the pumpkin cranberry spice she now has available.

“One of the most popular ones is our chocolate mint. And everyone says that that’s like drinking a thin mint or an Ande’s Candy or something of that kind of - kind of nature. We have 45 varieties right now. Some of them are seasonal - spring - that we’ll be phasing out as we get into the winter,” she says.

It was quality time spent with her grandson that served as a catalyst for the business.

“I have a grandson who one day when I was playing with herbs, said, ‘can you make me tea.’ And I thought about it and I said ‘yes.’ And I put together a hibiscus tea for him, and he loved it. But I didn’t - I was fairly new to that part of playing with herbs, so I - I didn’t know how much I was making when I made it, so I brought it to the Farmer’s Market one day and sold it, and sold it all out in a day,” says Grieco.

Next came her Nana’s Irish Breakfast Tea, based on a blend her grandmother once brewed. From there, more blends followed. Grieco says with the holidays approaching, tea makes a great gift.
