PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Herb Courtney was a star basketball player at Hatboro-Horsham High School and the University of Delaware. But early in his career with the Blue Hens he suffered a serious knee injury, tearing his ACL.

"When I tore it, it obviously hurt, but you don't have surgery right away, so I was able to get it stronger and I said, 'Man, this is going to be fine,'" he recalled.

"Then I had a huge wakeup call when you wake up from surgery, right? You can’t move your knee and it hurts to bend it in the rehab. It wasn't just an ACL for me; it was literally every ligament in my knee. So it was tough. It was a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be. It taught me a lot of things."

Courtney recovered, then went on to score more than 1,200 points and pull down more than 600 rebounds at Delaware.

After playing professionally overseas and then working as a collegiate assistant coach, he decided to start his own company.

Courtney launched Renaissance Search and Consulting, a firm that helps connect colleges and universities with diverse candidates for their athletic departments. He talked about why he chose this path.

"The diversity issue within college sports and really wanting to make an impact, that's kind of where the idea initially started," he explained.

"Our biggest thing is we want to inspire change through action. Just knowing the landscape of diversity within college athletics, and obviously the higher in leadership positions that you go the less diverse it is. There's been many articles written and just a lot of awareness now on it. I think that's something that we wanted to impact."
