BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Girl Scout Heart of New Jersey Troops 40208 and 40721 Ambassador Girl Scouts in Berkeley Heights came together in an effort to restore the local Historic Herb Garden of the Littel-Lord Farmstead.

The Scouts completed the "Girl Scout Journey Sow What?" where they learned about the impacts of the environment, carbon footprints, farming and more.  Each journey requires the girls to take what they learned and put it into action to help improve and educate their community.

The troops collaborated to help restore the historical garden which had been completely overgrown and in disrepair.  The girl scouts wanted the garden to be accurate to the 1700s time period, during which the original farmstead was built, so they first researched what herbs and plants would have been used in a farm during the 1700s.

In addition, for the project to be successful, the Girl Scouts had to delegate tasks, organize schedules, contact landscapers for advice, and continuously meet and work on the garden, as the job was definitely a long term one. The resurrection of this garden was a big task which included designing, weeding, tilling the soil, planting and tagging historically accurate herbs, mulching, watering, working on the fence, laying new stepping stones and pavers and creating an informational brochure for visitors to use when visiting the garden.

The Troops would like to thank Daniel Palladino of the Berkeley Heights Historical Society for his guidance and support of this project. They would also like to thank Jarret Stagaard of Stagaard Landscaping, LLC for his donation of time and resources towards the project.

With the completion of the garden, the Girl Scouts' hope is that residents will stop by to see both the hard work put into this project and connect with the history of Berkeley Heights in an interactive way. This project took the scouts over a year to compete but the results were well worth the effort.
