Herb McCandless is one of drag racing’s most enthusiastic ambassadors of the early Pro Stock era. His passion for the sport, and for the Hemi engines he raced are as alive today as they were in these photos from his 1970 season.
In 1970, the NHRA launched its Pro Stock class for a season long campaign of Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, and American Motors muscle cars in head-to-head competition. Amongst a list of drag racing’s most iconic names: Bill Bagshaw, Sonny Bryant, Bob Glidden, Bill Jenkins, Dick Landy, Butch Leal, Hubert Platt, Don Nicholson, Ronnie Sox, and Reid Whisnant— one of the standout drivers was Sox & Martin’s hired gun, Herb McCandless. A young man from North Carolina, who would go on to become known as “Mr. 4 Speed” for his quick shifts, reliable performance, and race wins in the clutch.
