Herb-infused simple syrups are a great way to add flavor to beverages and foods and they could not be easier to make.

Step #1 — Add 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a saucepan.

Step #2 — add your herb or other flavoring.  But choose just one.  Combining flavors is not recommended.  For example, for a simple syrup ratio of one cup sugar and one cup water, you may choose to add:

  • 4-5 fresh basil leaves (torn)
  • sprig of fresh rosemary (roughly chopped)
  • 3-4 oz. peeled and roughly chopped fresh ginger root
  • 5-6 fresh mint leaves (torn)
  • 1 jalapeño other hot  pepper variety

Step #3 — bring mixture to boil on high heat.  Once mixture comes to boil, whisk constantly until all sugar is dissolved. About 1-2 minutes.

Step #4 — Remove from heat and set pan aside to cool (about 40 min) Once simple syrup is completely cooled, use a strainer and pour into glass jars for storage.  Label and store in refrigerator when not in use.

Herb-infused simple syrups can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Using herb-infused simple syrups is downright ??????.  Here are some ideas:

Rosemary Gin Gimblet (for 2)

Mix in a shaker:

  • 5 oz. gin
  • 3 oz. lime juice
  • 2 oz. rosemary-infused simple syrup
  • ice

Strain and pour into chilled glasses. Garnish with fresh rosemary.

Basil-infused Lemonade (pitcher)

  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • 1 3/4 cup basil-infused simple syrup
  • 3 cups water

Combine ingredients in pitcher and garnish with fresh basil leaves and/or lemon wheels.

Serve over ice.

Spicy Margarita

add 1 1/2 oz. jalapeño-infused simple syrup to your favorite margarita mix, add tequila, and there you go … a picante margarita!

Mint Ice-Tea

  • 4 cups freshly brewed tea (cooled)
  • 1/2 cup mint-infused simple syrup (more or less to regulate sweetness)

Serve over ice. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and/or lemon wheels.

Homemade Ginger Ale:

Add 1 Tbs. ginger simple syrup to one can non-flavored seltzer water.  Use more/less simple syrup to regulate desired sweetness.
