Herb Jones' Fight Through Injuries Serves as Inspiration to Alabama Basketball - Bama Maven

herb.indah.link

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Over the last two weeks, Alabama basketball has been in somewhat of a slump due to injuries that have hampered its face pace of play.

It’s something that Crimson Tide fans are all too used to in the month of February.

This time, however, it’s different. While the games have been closer, Alabama has managed to escape with a 3-1 record over its last four games, with its only loss being at Oklahoma this past Saturday in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

While the Crimson Tide is still seeing success, its deeper injury issues are beginning to become troubling for both the team and its fans. Chiefly among those injuries is senior wing Herb Jones, who suffered a dislocated finger back on Jan. 12 against Alabama’s first matchup at Kentucky.

While Jones has still been playing his hardest, he has been consistently withheld from practices in order to avoid contact and re-aggravate the injury. At a time when the Crimson Tide need him most, Jones has stayed the course, fighting through the injury and making the most of his minutes on the hardwood.

This Wednesday, Alabama will need him more than ever as LSU pays a visit to Tuscaloosa. The Tigers are currently tied for second in the conference — three games behind the SEC-leading Crimson Tide. With Alabama having already beaten LSU by a hefty margin back on Jan. 19 in Baton Rouge, the Tigers are expected to be better prepared than they were for their last matchup.

On Tuesday morning, Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats said that despite Jones having to play through the injury, he is expected to play on Wednesday night in Coleman Coliseum.

“That’s the plan,” Oats said. “I mean, he hasn’t practiced but he doesn’t like to sit too many games out. In talking to the trainers, doctors, therapists and everything it’s not setting him back any further by him playing. The only thing would be if he got hit in that one spot again which he hasn’t for the last couple of games. It actually does him good to get it loosened up. We’ve been holding him out of practice so he doesn’t take a hit or fall on that but I anticipate he’ll go. Probably won’t be 100 percent again but he’ll still be a lot better than most other guys out there.”

Fighting through injuries is something that this Alabama squad has been forced to become used to this season. It started back on Jan. 12 when grad-student forward Jordan Bruner went down with a torn meniscus, forcing him to stand on the side of the court ever since. Combine that injury will illnesses suffered by sophomore guard Jahvon Quinerly and junior forward James Rojas, and this Alabama team has been pretty banged up over the last couple of weeks.

Senior forward Alex Reese has had to fight through an injury of his own lately, having tweaked his leg and causing him pain while he is on the court. However, Reese says that it is the determination of Jones that keeps him in the fight.

“Obviously y’all know what Herb does for us,” Reese said. “Y’all know how important he is for us defensively and taking care of the ball on offense and to run offense for us — making all the loose ball plays, the hard hat plays — all that type of stuff so y’all know how he is for that. To see him battle through that is inspiring. It makes me go, it makes me keep playing because none of my injuries have been that significant, so it really just pushes me — it pushes us — to play harder for him and for the team.”

Last week, freshman guard Josh Primo referred to Jones as a “soldier.” The term is most fitting for Jones, who fights through pain for the betterment of his squad. Combine that with his leadership among his teammates, and there’s no one on this Crimson Tide team that deserves the nickname more.

On Tuesday, Jones’ teammate in sophomore guard Jaden Shackelford also called him a soldier, echoing Reese and calling his acts on the court an inspiration.

“It’s inspiration to see somebody fight through stuff like that for the betterment of the team,” Shackelford said. “It makes everybody want to go harder. It makes guys fight through other stuff just like Herb does.

“He’s a leader on this team so he leads and we follow. He sets the example so he’s a fighter. He’s a soldier.”

Alabama basketball still has a long way to go before March, but with the effort on the court from its injured players, the Crimson Tide are poised to make a historic run for the program should they return to full health in the coming weeks.

Oats made the point that while his team is struggling with injuries, it’s nothing new to his team or college basketball as a whole.

“It’s February,” Oats said. “[In] February, no one’s 100-percent healthy. You gotta play through that stuff. You gotta figure out ways to win. We gotta do a better job. We really haven’t played well in a couple of weeks to be honest with you so we gotta get back to where the ball’s moving a little bit better.”

Black History Month: Herb Greenlee’s impact in the Tri-Cities - WJHL-TV News Channel 11

herb.indah.link

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) News Channel 11 and ABC Tri-Cities is honoring the impact of African-Americans in the Tri-Cities this Black History Month.

On this first day of Black History Month, Pheben Kassahun highlights Johnson City native, Kenneth “Herb” Greenlee.

Carver Recreation Center director, Herb Greenlee said, “I wanted to be there and make an impact on our community with kids that don’t have a direction.”

Early on, Johnson City native, Herb Greenlee knew the role that education plays in a child’s success.

Greenlee said, “Not standing around and do nothing. Be educated. Get you a good job, and come back and put something back into the community. That’s what I hope. I had somebody that helped me. I had plenty of mentors.”

Greenlee attended segregated schools until 1965, when a federal judge ordered all city schools to desegregate schools in a matter of months.

He added, “In the segregated school, you had teachers that thought more of you because if you got out of line, wasn’t doing the class work, your parents would know about it in a heartbeat. Going to an integrated school was a little bit different. It seemed like nobody cared.”

Greenlee graduated from Science Hill High School in 1973 and began his quest to improve the life of the youth in his hometown through education. He got into the Johnson City Schools system as a security guard for Liberty Bell Middle School.

“He’s just an all around wonderful person,” former Johnson City-Washington County NAACP president, Jean Neal told Kassahun.

Jean Neal described Greenlee as a pillar in the Johnson City community.

“What I like about him is- it’s just not the black community he is concerned about, which is his first concern, but he also likes to include everybody,” she added.

“Make it not segregated, but integrated. More integrated than anything because we attract a lot of different people. The Asians, the Latinos, the Africans and plus the blacks, and the whites,” Greenlee said.

Neal told Kassahun that when Greenlee was called onto the Carver Rec Center in 1987, he made drastic changes in the way it functioned for the community starting with tutoring those who struggled in school.

“Provides everything that we need. He also does that with every organization in the community. He’s helped the NAACP. We’ve had things down there he has supported,” she said.

Greenlee said, “Everybody came to Carver for some type of program, whether it was an athletic, whether it was a program of educational program or stuff like that and we honored all of our seasonal stuff like Martin Luther King programs, Black History Month, Easter. We have a program where we honor people through awards. We have a program now where we have and honor people where we have the Carver Wall of Fame.”

His dedication to education continues, as last year, Greenlee was elected to the Johnson City Board of Education.

“That’s why he ran so many times for the school board and it’s mostly to make sure that the kids get everything that they are entitled to,” Neal said.

He has proven that his resilience and passion for kids in his community never failed.

Greenlee said, “Give them a direction whether it’s in technology or going to college or doing something because we do have a scholarship here. In the director before me, Will Melvin Stephen Scholarship. We honor Melvin Stephens by giving out scholarships out for kids that want to continue their education and that’s important.”

We invite you to join us every Monday through the month of February as we deliver reports honoring Black history right here on News Channel 11 at 7 p.m.

HERB BENHAM: You want me to burn cement? - The Bakersfield Californian

herb.indah.link

Friends have gone to gas. Friends who I never thought would go to gas have gone to gas. Gas, for friends, to whom wood was like a religion.

I’m talking about a gas fireplace. Gas logs made of cement. Whatever they’re made of, they’re not made of wood.

I understand. There are a million reasons to choose gas over wood and many start with the environment.

Gas is easy on the environment. Gas doesn’t launch anything in the air. Gas is cheaper, more energy-efficient and a good gas fireplace can probably heat an entire house rather than a six-foot circumference around the fireplace like ours does.

I’m all about the environment. I love the environment. The deer, the bunnies, field mushrooms in the winter and dew on the morning roses.

I love being in the environment, thinking about the environment and carrying on about the environment like I’m doing now.

However, I don’t want to give up on wood. Not yet. Maybe not until I go to the place where I’ll never be cold again and when I do, you can use the last of the wood in the wood pile to send me packing because olive burns sure and hot.

My own wife has turned on me. Hard to believe. She had my back like heat from a good fire but now her ardor has cooled like the morning ashes.

“You know it would be nice if I could just come into the living room on these cold mornings and turn on the gas,” she said. “I’d probably use the room more.”

You want me to give up wood? What would I do with my friend, Bart? Our one-day-a-year trip to Lindsay and the olive orchards where we saw, drag and haul the heavier-than-you think olive branches in the old truck?

Shall I sell the truck too? Throw away my leather gloves that protect my city-soft hands? Should we abandon the stories we tell each other on the way there and back? Stories that aren’t true, but could be.

If there is no wood, there are no conversations about wood:

“Why doesn’t this wood burn? Why did they sell me green wood? When did wood get so expensive?”

Conversations about the good old days. You can’t have that kind of conversation around hot cement. Then, you’re talking about changing with the times and why would I want to do that?

How do you replace the sound? The crackling, the popping, the sighing sound of a fire after cocktails, dinner and sitting by the fire? The sound of a log falling off the stack after you’ve gone to bed, a log that may or may not have rolled on the oak floor and burned a hole in it?

I love the smell. I especially love the smell of our fireplace that evidently has a hole somewhere in the chimney, a chink in the brick wall, and after the fire burns for five or six hours, there is wood smoke in every room upstairs and down. I’m surprised we haven’t been asphyxiated while sleeping, me dreaming of wood and Sue of a new gas fireplace.

I’m sure there are rebates galore on the new gas inserts and when you do the math, it pays for itself before the pomegranates ripen and the leaves turn brown but right now I like knowing there is wood stacked geometrically in the woodpile, a place where brown recluse spiders and black spiders can nest and termites can propagate and eviscerate the north side of the house until the only wall left is the woodpile wall.

These are the good old days. I’m too young to give them up and this childhood seems to be lasting a long time.

Grow A Culinary Herb Garden Indoors This Winter - Vermont Public Radio

herb.indah.link

Get a taste of greenery by learning to grow easy culinary herbs indoors right now. Learning the right lighting, watering, temperature and harvesting are key to growing indoor herbs!

Chives, parsley and mint are the easiest culinary herbs to grow indoors. Plus, these are fast-growing and need less light so you can place them in an East- or West-facing window.

For Mediterranean herbs like thyme, oregano, sage and rosemary, place the potted herbs in a sunny South-facing window or use grow lights. With grow lights, you can grow basil indoors, too!

Look for individual herb plants at garden centers and you’ll be able to harvest sooner instead of starting everything from seed. And once you’ve chosen the herbs you like, plant them in their own pots as some like moist soil more than others. Then, just place them in a sunny spot away from a cold window.

Once they get big enough to start harvesting, simply snip the leaves and add to pastas and salads. Then in spring, move them outdoors to your garden.

Q: I love having herbal tea especially in the winter and would like to know some good medicinal herbs I can grow inside during the winter? Can I bring my lemon balm and peppermint plants inside in the fall? — Anastatia, in Thetford

Yes, bring those plants in from the garden in the fall and then have medicinal herbs indoors all winter. Those are great examples of some medicinal herbs and there are others that are also culinary herbs, like rosemary, tarragon or lavender. Even thyme and oregano are medicinal. You can play around and try to grow echinacea and bee balm from seed though it will take awhile for leaves to get big enough to steep in a tea, for instance. Next spring, you can bring those plants you started from seed to grow outdoors in the garden then back indoors next winter!

Q: I get brown and wilted leaves on our orchids, often just half or so of a large crescent dark green leaf, and I always wonder if I should cut off the brown part. Any suggestions? — Charlie, in Weybridge

This leaf-browning issue is usually a sign that the roots have died from either too much or too little watering so adjust watering a bit and see if that helps. Also, you can cut off brown leaves completely and then watch your watering and make sure the water drains out well. As we get closer to spring, you can also repot the orchid in a new container with fresh bark medium.

All Things Gardening is powered by you, the listener! Send your gardening questions and conundrums and Charlie may answer them in upcoming episodes. You can also leave a voicemail with your gardening question by calling VPR at (802) 655-9451.

Community celebrates Herb Foster's 93rd birthday - Martha's Vineyard Times

herb.indah.link

More than 70 Vineyard community members drove by Herb Foster’s home Sunday to wish him a happy 93rd birthday, and thank him for his ceaseless dedication to the betterment of the Island.

When asked what he wanted to say to his dozens of fans who carried signs, American flags, and bells as they drove by on his birthday, Foster smiled and said, “Thank you for supporting our library staff. I think we have raised quite a bit of money, so it was really good, I’m very happy about it.”

Ever since he moved to the Island full time in 1998 with his late wife, Anita, Foster has served as a pillar of community involvement in several capacities.

Apart from being on the Edgartown Free Public Library’s board of trustees — a position he holds near and dear to his heart — Foster is also president emeritus of the Martha’s Vineyard Herbrew Center, a member of the Island NAACP chapter, and is heavily involved with the veteran community, having served as a Morse Code operator in the United States Army during World War II.

Just a few days before Foster’s birthday, his daughter, Donna Fern Foster, teamed up with Edgartown library director Lisa Sherman (a longtime friend of Foster’s) to plan the drive-by celebration.

By the time Sunday rolled around, more than 70 people had RSVP’d for the event, and dozens more folks decided to spontaneously stop by once they heard about the impromptu party. The drive-by party was held because of the ongoing pandemic.

On the evite.com online event listing, dozens of well-wishers wrote kind messages to Herb on his special day.

Robert Herman wrote, “our hero” on the online invitation, and at the drive-through celebration he said, “We love Herb.”

Linsey Lee wrote, “Happy Birthday to the most wonderful guy!” and Mike McCourt wrote, “I’d be more than honored to be involved in celebrating Herb’s Birthday. Such an amazing person.”

Some folks couldn’t attend the celebration, but wrote how much they wished they could be there to wave and blow kisses.

Jerry Fritz wrote, “dear old friend, I wish I could be there to join the drive by crew. I hope and pray your day is filled with much joy and many blessings. I just spoke of you recently in my Sunday morning message. Remember how you and I loved to share jokes and stories?”

Additionally, the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library have established the Herb and Anita Foster Staff Education Fund, which will “support professional development for Edgartown Library staff members who wish to pursue educational endeavors that support and enhance their role at the library,” according to the online event page.

Sherman said that, in years past, everyone looked forward to Foster’s house parties, and he looked forward to them equally.

“Herb just loves a party,” Sherman said. “I hate that we can’t have his regular party this year.”

But, according to Sherman, she and Foster’s family wanted to make this year as memorable as all the prior ones.

For Sherman, the immense outpouring of community support for Foster’s birthday is evidence to how involved he has been in all facets of the Island.

“I think the outpouring of love he saw today is definitely a representation of all the support and love he has given to our community over the years, and I am so thrilled that there were so many people who were able to come out and support him here today,” Sherman said.

Donna added that it usually takes at least a month to plan Foster’s birthday party, but because she was concerned about his health, she decided to have the party sooner.

She echoed Sherman’s sentiment that Foster has done so much for the Vineyard, and the folks who drove by on his birthday wanted to return the favor.

“It’s all about my dad’s personality and everything he has done for this Island. He doesn’t know a single stranger,” Donna said. “He’s the type of person who would be standing in the grocery line and start speaking with someone next to him, and invite them to his party.”

After several police officers and fire personnel drove by to wave at Foster, flash their lights, and wish him a happy birthday, Edgartown Police Chief Bruce McNamee said he “wouldn’t have missed this occasion for anything.”

“Herb sought me out as soon as I started here,” McNamee said. “It’s interesting, especially from a police perspective — on matters of race, he has been on top of topics like that for 30 or 40 years.”

McNamee said that, as a veteran himself, “it’s hard not to be inspired by [Foster],” and added that “there are a lot of treats about being the Edgartown police chief, but being friends with Herb is right at the top.”

You can honor Herb this year by sending a check to the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library, 26 West Tisbury Road, Edgartown, MA 02539, or click on this link and select The Herb and Anita Foster Staff Education Fund from the drop-down menu.
