Homeschooled teen wins prestigious Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship - WEAU

herb.indah.link

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -A local homeschooled teen has been named one of just 100 Wisconsin recipients of the $10,000 Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship for 2021.

Kailyn Walukas will be attending Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.

But the academic achievements don’t stop there, on top of the Herb Kohl Scholarship, Walukas has received an additional six scholarships from her school of choice, two of those for continuing her musical endeavors.

Proud mom and homeschool teacher, Kristin Walukas has been homeschooling Kailyn since fourth grade.

“I’m still a little shocked, I’m of course super excited and just over the moon happy to have these scholarships to my favorite college,” says Kailyn Walukas.

We’re also very similar in nature, and we do bud heads sometimes, but I’ve never had to force her to do school work...because she’s naturally curious and wants to learn about the world so that has really made it very easy to teach her,” says Kristin Walukas.

With a passion for teaching that she hopes to pursue after college, Kailyn currently teaches an online literature class for classical homeschoolers in fourth grade.

“It’s been really fun to take on that leadership role, and it’s been really cool to see their excitement about reading because I loved reading as a kid, I still do so it’s just been awesome to connect with the kids in that way,” says Kailyn.

Kailyn plans to major in mathematics, and continue her studies in both music and French.

Ingredients

For the Lebanese Mujadara:

  • 4 medium onions, cut in half and thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked or sweet)
  • 4 1/2 cups vegetable broth (use 1/2 a cup for the onions)
  • 1 cup of red lentils, rinsed
  • 1 cup bulgur, rinsed
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Lemon-mint vinaigrette:

  • 2/3 cup lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic pressed
  • 1/3 cup chopped mint
  • 1/3 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley

Preparation

  1. Heat a medium pot over medium-high heat. Add the onions and stir them constantly until they start to brown.
  2. Stir in 1/2 a cup of vegetable broth and continue cooking until the broth evaporates.
  3. Transfer half of the onions to a plate and cover them to keep them warm. Alternatively, you can transfer them to a baking tray and keep them warm in the oven at 4250 F.
  4. Once you have removed the onions, add the garlic, cumin, cinnamon, allspice, and paprika to the cooking pot. Stir to mix them in.
  5. Add the vegetable broth and use a spoon to pick up any pieces of onion or spices that may have stuck to the bottom of the pan.
  6. Mix in the lentils and bulgur and bring the pot to a medium simmer (low boil). Cover the pot and lower the heat slightly so that it doesn’t boil over.
  7. Check after 10 minutes and give the contents of the pot a stir. Add another ½ cup of broth or water if the liquid is mostly absorbed already.
  8. Cover the pot and cook for an additional 5 minutes until the lentils and bulgur are tender. At this point, most or all of the broth has dissipated.
  9. To make the vinaigrette, combine lemon juice, garlic, mint, and parsley.
  10. Garnish individual servings of mujadara with the remaining onions and lemon-herb vinaigrette.
  11. Store any leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  12. To reheat on the stove or microwave, add water. This keeps it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Herb Foster, Outgoing Islander Who Championed Veteran Causes, Dies at 93 - The Vineyard Gazette - Martha's Vineyard News

herb.indah.link

Herb Foster, the perpetually vibrant linguist, library trustee and World War II veteran who trained his beaming smile on everyone he knew and met, died Friday night at his home in Edgartown. He was 93 and had celebrated his birthday on Jan. 31 in traditional Herb Foster fashion, with a big party — this time a drive-by of more than 80 friends and well wishers, due to the pandemic. Invitations had gone out by E-vite early in the month.

Linguist, Edgartown library trustee and World War II veteran. — Maria Thibodeau

Edgartown library director Lisa Sherman confirmed Mr. Foster’s death.

“He always had a twinkle in his eye and it was so infectious,” the library director said. “He was an amazing force of nature.”

Mr. Foster had been a library trustee since 2006 and had taken out nomination papers to run again this year, Ms. Sherman said.

A lifelong educator and professor emeritus of the State University of New York School of Education, he was a prolific writer and speaker. Among other things, he had written extensively about Yiddish and Jive, including authoring books on the two slang languages.

He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y, and his Jewish heritage cultivated his lifelong interest in Yiddish. His introduction to Jive started when he was teaching junior high students in Harlem.

“You have to learn the language of your students,” he told the Gazette in a 2018 interview about his book Ghetto to Ghetto: Yiddish & Jive in Everyday Life. “Students have to learn standard English, but you have to learn their language, too.” He also said:

Mr. Foster behind the wheel for his impromptu July 4 parade last summer, with his friend and fellow veteran Bob Falkenburg. — Maria Thibodeau

“Every group that came to America contributed their words to American English, but Jews and Blacks have contributed more words than any other groups. This is like a history book. No one has done this before. You have Yiddish books and Jive books, but no one ever put them together as two people who have suffered similar things, but are still alive and doing things.”

It was classic Herb Foster: quirky, humorous and endlessly engaged with his subject matter.

Gregarious by nature, he loved people and also his adopted home town of Edgartown, where he had visited since the 1970s and had moved year-round with his late wife Anita in the 1990s. Also an educator, Anita died in 2006. They were married for 54 years.

Herb was known to just about everyone in Edgartown, where he cut a wide swath across socio-economic lines, from volunteering at the senior center to trekking the annual land bank cross-Island hike on National Trails Day every June.

A decorated World War II veteran and one of the last surviving Islanders from the Greatest Generation, he had served with the 24th Infantry Division in the occupation of Japan and was known perhaps best of all for his fixture role in the annual Veterans’ Day and Fourth of July parades on the Island. This past summer when the Fourth of July parade was canceled due to the pandemic, Mr. Foster decided to take matters into his own hands.

With his friend and fellow veteran Bob Falkenberg, age 93, Mr. Foster revved up his yellow Jeep, and the two veterans drove through the streets of downtown Edgartown, following the traditional parade route, escorted by Edgartown police.

“I look forward to the parade every year,” Mr. Foster said. “Despite what’s going on in the country today, it is very important to pay homage to all those men and women who were killed fighting for our country.”

After his impromptu parade, Mr. Foster said it had been emotional.

“We did it, despite all the obstacles” he told the Gazette. “I cried every minute of it.”

Turning reflective, he referred to the poem Ulysses by Alfred Tennyson, which he felt encapsulated the moment.

“It talks about not having the strength we had then, but still being able to fight, to do something,” he said.

It was one of his last public appearances in town.

His daughter Donna was caring for him at the time of his death. He is also survived by his daughter Andrea.

Services will be private, Ms. Sherman said.

Martha's Vineyard mourns loss of Vera Short, Herb Foster - Martha's Vineyard Times

herb.indah.link

The Island lost two of its leading and longtime civil rights advocates Saturday, Vera Shorter and Herb Foster.

Shorter was born in 1923 in Huntington, Long Island.

Vera’s life was devoted to family, career, and civil rights advocacy in New York. She attended business school and became the first African American equal opportunity officer in the New York district of the IRS.

Her activism led her to the Brooklyn chapter of the NAACP.

Shorter came to the Island in the 1960s and 1970s with her family.

“We stayed with friends, who usually had other guests in the house: black lawyers, writers, artists … and other high achievers. The conversations were about social issues and change. It was very energizing,” she told The Times in 2018. In 1976, when her husband Rufus Shorter was named the first Black superintendent of Martha’s Vineyard schools, he and Vera became year-round Islanders.

For the next 40 years, Vera would be a pillar of social activism on the Island. “At the time, the NAACP was calling for nationwide action to ensure equal opportunity in labor contracts,” she said. “The local branch obtained guarantees from every Island town that we would be involved in all hiring efforts.”

When aspiring Black educators were being denied teaching certificates, Vera helped her husband develop a program to change the system. Colleges signed on, and 16 young Island teachers received certification that first year.

Foster was born in Brooklyn in 1928. After graduating from high school during World War II, Herb went to NYU for a week, then signed up for the Army. He put his college plans on hold, and went on to become a Morse code radio operator in occupied Japan. Herb played football in the military with guys from all over the United States. “I was as good as they were,” he said in 2018. “I imagine most of them are gone.”

Foster, a World War II veteran, wrote about his experiences for The Times and honored others by sharing words and phrases from the army.

Herb and his late wife Anita moved to the Island full-time in the late 1990s. “We first came in 1974; we sailed here,” Herb told The Times in 2018 during his 90th birthday. “My wife has a cousin who had a 42-foot boat so we sailed to Nantucket and came here. I took pictures of mechanical sharks in crates; it was the year they made ‘Jaws,’ and I had no idea what they were for. Somewhere I have Kodak slides.”

Foster was also known for his commitment to civil rights.

Herb Foster celebrated his 93rd birthday just a few weeks ago. -Jeremy Driesen

During school desegregation in the 1960s and 70s, he and a friend, George Singfield, who is Black, traveled across the country giving lectures and presentations on breaking communication barriers between urban Black youth and the white adults in the school systems.

He was a member of the NAACP of Martha’s Vineyard, a past president of the Hebrew Center, a trustee at the Edgartown library, and a member of the board of directors of the Martha’s Vineyard Social Justice Leadership Foundation. He was part of the SUNY Buffalo task force on institutionalized racism, and participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963.

The loss of both Shorter and Foster was felt across the Island.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that our long-time Island civil rights advocates and members, Vera Shorter and Herb Foster have passed,” Martha’s Vineyard NAACP president Arthur Doubleday wrote in a statement. “Both Mrs. Shorter and Mr. Foster were beacons of wisdom to us all. I am heartbroken by this news. The chapter will be updating everyone shortly on details of further celebrations of life.”

Edgewater's Herb Restaurant gives out free dinners to the community - WLS-TV

herb.indah.link
CHICAGO (WLS) -- It's Friday night and Thai takeout is what's for dinner, but tonight the meal is on the house.

"I have my team working in the kitchen, so at least they have some work to do, and then the community is able to enjoy," said owner Patty Neumson.

Neumson was just giving away her popular Thai dishes to any passing person.

"I feel fortunate," she said. "I feel like I am privileged to be giving to people because some people do not have, they cannot give. But I have and I can give, you know? And my friends who own the restaurants, they can give too."

Indoor dining is back open, but customer flow to tables just isn't what it was. So, Patty voluntarily shut down Herb for a night of community charity for a second weekend. This time she was also able to convince a few other neighborhood spots to join in.

"This time we organized a group, so we do it as a group and we are really happy for what we can do right now. Even though it's tough we're still happy," Neumson said.

"There are a lot of different restaurants, and of course after COVID you always want everything to stay alive, so I feel like it gives a lot of good PR to some restaurants that are tucked away," said Ryan Penna, volunteer.

A waiter himself, Penna is trying to help spread the good word.

"This is the neighborhood I grew up in. it's just kind of nice to be on the street being the actual hands that gives back, more than just an idea," he said.

It won't turn a profit, but in a pandemic, Neumson said that's not really what matters.

"I am losing money, but gain the feeling of good," she said.

Why Are Dry Herb Vaporizers a Game Changer For The Marijuana Industry? - The Southern Maryland Chronicle

herb.indah.link

The marijuana industry has seen a boom in the last few years, and it is largely owing to the fact that recreational marijuana has been made legal in many states throughout America. This has resulted in many products being released, but only one being the most popular; dry herb vaporizers.

This vaping device has been a game-changer for the marijuana industry, and has allowed it to expand it’s reach to a wider audience. Traditional methods of consuming are on the way out, and possibly because of dry herb vaporizers. Here are a few reasons as to why dry herb vaporizers are a boon for the marijuana industry.

There’s a range to choose from

The marijuana and vaporizer industry has exploded in the last few years due to technological advancements and innovative devices. When dry herb vaporizers were first released, they were quite expensive and not something that anyone could just go out and purchase. These days on the other hand, with such a wide variety of dry herb vaporizers available, such as those found on https://magicvaporizers.co.uk/, there’s something to suit anyone’s preference and wallet. Now there are devices for someone who is just starting out, or anyone who considers themselves a connoisseur.

The first type of dry herb vaporizer is the session vaporizer, and essentially allows users to load the marijuana into the oven, select a temperature and then inhale the vapor. These are typically used for when you are sitting down and not expecting to be getting up any time soon.

On-demand vaporizers are the second most popular dry herb vaporizers and have been designed for those on the go. The heating methods in this vaporizer are different, allowing the heat to rise quickly and cool down just as fast, meaning that users can take a few hits without needing to vape all of the herb in the chamber.

The accessories market is big

With the creation of all these dry herb vaporizers, another market has sprouted which is almost as successful, which is the accessories market. In order to vape marijuana, you would first need to grind it, which would require a grinder. In addition, If you don’t wan to charge your dry herb vaporizer when the battery is flat, there are many stores that sell batteries.

These can be pre-charged, specially designed dry herb vaporizer battery chargers that can recharge multiple batteries at once, allowing users to swap out batteries at any time.

In addition to all of this, there are vaporizer cases, charging cables, funnels, filters, mouthpieces and more. Many people like to customize their dry herb vaporizers which the accessories market is happy to help with, and this has led to many online head shops and physical stores to open, selling only accessories.

It’s healthier

Traditional methods of consuming marijuana are all but being replaced by dry herb vaporizers, not only because of the above listed reasons, but because it is simply healthier.

This is because traditional methods use combustion to heat the marijuana, which releases harmful carcinogens and toxins that are inhaled, as well as when using a joint, the burning paper is being inhaled too. There are many health problems associated with this method, such as heart disease, lung or throat cancer and asthma to name a few.

Dry herb vaporizers avoid all of this by using a completely different heating method. This is possible because the temperature that marijuana is heated at is much lower than that of combustion, and can be manually set by the user. Not only does this mean that harmful toxins and carcinogens aren’t released, the herb itself isn’t wasted and the terpenes that provide flavor aren’t destroyed. This results in a cleaner, more focused and flavorful experience.

There are additional benefits

Aside from the various health benefits that dry herb vaporizers provide, there are many additional benefits too. One of the most popular reasons that people have stated is that it is discreet, since the devices are relatively small, can be concealed easily, don’t leave behind a pungent smell, and the vapor doesn’t cling to clothes or other materials.

Another benefit, depending on the device that you have, is that it can store a lot of marijuana, added with a long battery life, and the result is the ability to be able to vape whenever and wherever you are. Desktop vaporizers are also stated as the best method for sharing, since it can hold a large amount of herb.

Nothing beats sprinkling fresh herbs on a plate of home-cooked food. Herbs like basil, dill, and mint add an aromatic boost to any dish, earning rave reviews from the whole family. Sure, dried ones are just fine, but you’ll miss out on most of the nutritional value (and bright flavors) of just-picked herbs—and when you can easily create your own indoor herb garden, why settle?

Kits and planters can transform kitchen counters and windowsills into mini-gardens, even if you don’t have much space to spare. “Indoor herb gardening is one of the most diverse approaches to gardening due to its endless creativity opportunities,” says Jasmine Jefferson, gardener and founder of Black Girls With Gardens.

How to make an indoor herb garden

On top of adding personality to home-cooked meals and takeout alike, planting can also do wonders for your mental health, says expert gardener Melinda Myers. “Fresh herbs, even those grown indoors, taste better and have greater nutritional value,” she says. “And gardening indoors or out helps reduce stress, elevate our mood, and improve focus.”

A 2015 study even found that interacting with indoor plants significantly reduced both physical and mental stress—a lifesaver in the age of working from home. You might even want to keep the herbs at your desk; a 2020 study found that looking at and tending to a plant for just three minutes during the workday can decrease anxiety and pulse rate. Here’s how to get an herb garden going, with or without a green thumb.

Focus on light. Jefferson explains that the key to growing an indoor herb garden is light, whether from the sun or LEDs—that’s why a windowsill is one of the best spots to grow herbs indoors. “Regardless of method you choose, make sure you water only when needed, provide as much as light possible, and have fun exploring and watching your herbs grow,” she says. Plant grow lights are particularly helpful for rooms or locales that don’t get much sunlight, especially during the winter.

Find the features you need. Opt for kits and planters that have drainage holes and maybe even a grow light. Some indoor herb gardens come with all the essentials, while others are meant for more experienced gardeners. If you’re a complete newbie, hydroponic gardens can do the hard work for you; some of them even connect to apps that optimize the growing cycle.

Pick your favorites. When you finally put your mini-garden together, choose only the herbs you’re most likely to use, like basil, thyme, or mint. (Good news: These herbs are some of the easiest to grow.) If you enjoy the process, branch out and try new flavors.

Read on to find all the supplies you’ll need to transform your kitchen windowsill into a tiny greenhouse.

“Walking with Herb” set to premiere in April, pay tribute to late Mark Medoff - The Round Up

herb.indah.link

Directed by New Mexico State University professor, Ross Marks, and adapted for the screen by Mark Medoff, “Walking with Herb” is set to premiere in select theatres April 30 and will be available for streaming on PureFlix following the film’s theatre debut.

“Walking with Herb” will pay tribute to the late Medoff and the city of Las Cruces.

Joe Bullock, author of “Walking with Herb: A Spiritual Golfing Journey to the Masters” and NMSU graduate, described his novel and the upcoming film as a faith message.

“Everybody’s more capable of doing things than they think they are, that with enough faith and trust you can do about anything, that’s the message of the movie and I think it’s timely in today’s world,” Bullock said.

“Walking with Herb” follows a banker named Joe, played by Edward James Olmos, who is struggling with his faith on a spiritual journey after he receives a message on his computer from God.

Joe’s mission just so happens to be winning the “The World Championship Golf Tournament,” the biggest golf tournament in history. With guidance from a messenger sent by God named Herb, played by George Lopez, Joe sets out to prove that people are capable of more than they think.

Ross Marks, director and producer of “Walking with Herb” explained that principal photography took place in the fall of 2018 and shooting wrapped completely in October of 2018. “Walking with Herb” was filmed entirely in Las Cruces and for a few days in Artesia. NMSU students and other New Mexicans were employed throughout the filming process.

“There’s 68 people [who] worked on the film during principal photography. Probably about 20 of those were CMI [Creative Media Institute] grads, including our line producer, Keagan Karnes, and then we had 32 CMI, current CMI students, interning and working on the film,” Marks said.

Marks described the star-studded cast he directed, which includes Academy Award nominee Edward James Olmos, comedian George Lopez, Academy Award nominee Kathleen Quinlan, “Lord of the Rings” Billy Boyd and Christopher McDonald from “Happy Gilmore.”

“There’s an expression that when you’re making a movie: Casting is 90 percent,” Marks explained. “Well, I’ve learned that casting is 99 percent. If you cast your movie well, and you get really good actors, your job as a director is kind of point the camera, keep your mouth shut and stay out of the way.”

Mark Medoff, Tony Award-winning screenwriter, adapted the screenplay for “Walking with Herb” from Bullock’s novel.

“Mark just sequestered himself for about two or three months and did nothing but work on this he just loved the project so much,” Bullock said.

Medoff passed away in 2019 after battling cancer and Bullock described that he wants “Walking with Herb” to pay tribute to the late Medoff.

“We want this to be a wonderful tribute to Mark Medoff, he’s one of the most special people our town has ever had and did great things, and I just feel so flattered that he liked my book,” Bullock said.

Marks also described “Walking with Herb” as “a reflection of my love for NMSU and Las Cruces.”

“We [Marks and Medoff] wanted to make this film a tribute to our great city and our great university. So, we shot it here, the film was financed here, the novelist, screenwriter, director, producer is from Las Cruces,” Marks said.

Lincoln Elementary principal Kilar wins Herb Kohl Principal Leadership Award - Daily Union

herb.indah.link

WHITEWATER — Lincoln Elementary School principal Mary Kilar is among 16 statewide winners of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation 2021 Principal Leadership Award.

The Herb Kohl Principal Leadership program is established to recognize and support administrative leadership. The 16 Kohl Leadership Award winners are each recipients of a $6,000 grant from the Herb Kohl Education Foundation.

Kilar commented that she is honored to be chosen for the award.

“But also fully cognizant that I do not accept this award because of my work alone. Rather, this award represents the dedication the entire Lincoln School staff and community puts in daily,” Kilar stated. “We are a school that believes in the potential of every student, and when a community like this one comes together for students, great things happen! I am certainly blessed to be chosen, but even more blessed to be part of something as special as Lincoln School!”

Principal Leadership Award recipients are selected by a statewide committee which consist of civic leaders, and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors: Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools, Wisconsin Cooperative Educational Service Agencies, and Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation.

“Mrs. Mary Kilar has been an innovator for the Whitewater School District since 2014,” said Dr. Caroline Pate-Hefty, Whitewater Unified School District superintendent. “The outcomes of Mary's work as an instructional leader, during a pandemic, are perfectly balanced with assuring that the needs of all are met in her school community.”

Award recipients were notified of their awards on Wednesday.

“We are extremely proud of Mary’s accomplishments,” Pate-Hefty added.

Edgewater Restaurant Herb Serving Free Meals To Frontline Workers And People In Need This Weekend - Block Club Chicago

herb.indah.link

EDGEWATER — Local Thai eatery Herb will offer free meals to the community this weekend thanks to a program that gives restaurants grants for feeding peple in need.

Herb, 5424 N. Broadway, will provide free meals 5-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, according to the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce. The meals are available to frontline workers, community and non-profit employees, restaurant staff and people in need of a hot meal.

Meals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

The free meal program is made possible by High Road Kitchens, a nationwide campaign to boost restaurants during the pandemic by paying them to feed the community. High Road Kitchens launched in December in December, providing $1 million to local restaurants that had lost business during the pandemic and committed to providing free meals.

Restaurants in the program get a $10,000 grant for every 500 free meals served, with a maximum grant size of $30,000, according to High Road Kitchens.

The free meal program is the effort of One Fair Wage, a national campaign that seeks to raise the minimum wage. Herb and other grant recipients must commit to paying at least $15 an hour in non-tipped wages by 2026.

Herb also provided free meals last weekend.

Herb was opened in 2014 by chef-owner Patty Neuson and is known for its elevated take on Thai cuisine. Neuson is offering her signature Thai dishes as free meals, but she will also provide Italian and American meals for those seeking a different cuisine, she said in a statement.

“I see people who are cold and wet and working so hard that it breaks my heart to think that they may not be able to provide themselves with a healthy, warm meal,” Neuson said in a statement. “I want to do what I can to help them.”

Lavender for Anxiety: The Best Way to Use This Calming Herb - Healthline

herb.indah.link

Lavender has long been known for its floral aroma and attractive purple color.

Used at least since the medieval period, the plant and its many variations have commonly been used in perfumes, soaps, and recipes around the globe.

As well as looking and smelling lovely, lavender has a long history of being used in medicine. More recently, the plant is increasingly used to manage symptoms of anxiety.

Lavender is renowned for its ability to create a relaxing atmosphere.

In fact, one of the main benefits of lavender is that it can calm without sedating.

More than simply generating a serene state of mind, lavender can reduce anxiety by affecting the body’s fight-or-flight response.

Lavender essential oil has been found to be effective in reducing:

  • anxiety
  • restlessness
  • agitation
  • disturbed sleep
  • nervousness
  • depressive symptoms

An older 2005 study showed that the aroma of lavender and orange reduced anxiety in dental patients.

Another study showed that aromatherapy administered during labor can reduce anxiety in women. The study also found that inhaling three drops of lavender every 8 hours for 4 weeks prevented stress, anxiety, and depression after childbirth.

Lavender used in aromatherapy massage has been shown to improve the physical and mental state of young mothers, facilitating mother-infant interaction.

While research suggests there are health benefits, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t monitor or regulate the purity or quality of essential oils.

It’s important to talk with your healthcare professional before using essential oils. Be sure to research the quality of a brand’s products.

Some people may have allergic reactions to essential oils. Always do a patch test before trying a new essential oil and follow dosage and dilution guidelines.

Healthline

Lavender may have several beneficial effects that help ease anxiety, including:

  • improved mood
  • lower heart rate
  • lower adrenaline levels
  • regulated breathing
  • improved sleep quality

Nervous system

Lavender has been shown to affect the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system controls bodily processes associated with anxiety, such as heart rate, breathing rhythm, and hormone secretion.

Lavender can help in regulating these bodily processes by restoring a neutral state. This involves lowering the heart rate, adrenaline levels, and slowing the breath.

Mental health

Research suggests that lavender may be of benefit as a complementary treatment for mild to moderate depression.

An older 2006 study found lavender aromatherapy to have a beneficial effect on insomnia and depression in female college students.

A further study found lavender aroma inhalation to improve sleep quality, depression, and stress levels in older adults.

Another study indicated that lavender has an anti-anxiety and anti-depressive effect. Oral lavender taken for 6 weeks was shown to improve the general mental health and quality of life in 50 patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Sleep

Lavender has long been considered a natural sleep remedy to improve sleep quality and treat insomnia.

Research from 2010 has shown that orally administrated lavender can assist with symptoms of restlessness and disturbed sleep. This can help with anxiety, as well as improve general well-being and quality of life.

A further study on midlife women with insomnia found that 20 minutes of lavender inhalation through aromatherapy can significantly improve sleep quality.

The majority of research on lavender for anxiety symptoms includes oral administration and aromatherapy, suggesting these as the most effective methods to reduce symptoms.

Clinical trials suggest the best use of lavender for effective treatment of anxiety symptoms is through oral supplements containing lavender essential oil.

Although 100 and 200 milliliters (mL) of lavender oil in capsules has demonstrated to be effective, clinical studies show the most effective dose of lavender oil is suggested to be 80 milligrams (mg) per day. The study emphasizes that the lavender oil must be of high quality and not diluted with additives or synthetic substances.

However, anywhere between 20 and 80 mg is still effective, and there are no reports of adverse side effects at this dosage.

For aromatherapy, research indicates that inhalation through olfaction (sense of smell) should be at a minimum of 3 minutes to be effective.

Research from 2001 indicates that 10 minutes of inhalation has effects on bodily functions associated with anxiety, such as blood pressure and heart rate.

If you’re using a diffuser, make sure it’s on for a minimum of 10 minutes to see benefits.

Bottom line

Oral supplements and aromatherapy are the most effective ways to use lavender for anxiety.

Most commonly, lavender is used as lavender essential oil. Lavender is a versatile essential oil that can be used in a variety of ways.

When finding an oil, it’s important to make sure the label specifies “lavender essential oil” and not just “lavender oil.” Having “essential oil” on the label ensures it’s not just infused with lavender but a pure, concentrated oil from the plant.

Be sure to check all the ingredients on the label to make sure it’s not diluted with synthetic ingredients or fillers. Confirm the quality of the brand you choose with your doctor.

Bath

Essential oils can be a great addition to a bath, helping to calm, soothe, and relax while in a lavish setting.

Add a few drops of essential lavender to a bath and soak away to enjoy its benefits. You can either keep it simply lavender scented or use a combination of oils, such as lemon or orange.

Plus, the hot water can also help relax tired or sore muscles.

Diffuser

Aromatherapy diffusers disperse essential oils into the air. Any essential oils can be used in diffusers, including lavender or a mixture with other oils, such as orange or chamomile.

By diffusing the oils into the air, they’re inhaled by simple breathing, and research has shown that inhalation of lavender can significantly reduce anxiety levels.

Not only do the aromas in the air help deodorize the room, but they also can promote better sleep and ease symptoms of anxiety, particularly helping to relax and calm.

If you’re someone who experiences anxiety symptoms during scary or horror films, try diffusing some lavender while watching. A 2009 study found that lavender can reduce responses to anxiety-provoking film clips.

On body

When topically applied through massage, lavender oil is found to rapidly be absorbed by the skin, resulting in a sedative and relaxing effect.

You can either pat on oil from the bottle or use a rollerball. Apply to wrists, behind ears, and nape of neck throughout the day or as desired.

Oral

Research has shown that oral administration of lavender essential oil is an effective treatment for anxiety symptoms. In this study, 80 grams of Silexan (lavender oil in capsules) were taken for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Oral administration in this regard usually involves one-a-day capsules of lavender oil, such as Seremind.

Capsules

Capsules are a common method of consuming lavender, with studies showing they are effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety.

It’s important to make sure to read dosage and warnings on the bottle before use.

Tinctures

Tinctures are highly concentrated plant or herbal extracts.

Lavender tincture is a concentrated liquid extract made from distilling lavender flowers and buds in alcohol.

Consume by using the dropper to place a few drops under the tongue and swallow.

Lavender essential oil is generally recognized as safe by the FDA, but it must be used according to intended purposes and following dose guidelines on products.

Excessive intake of lavender oil has been reported to cause nausea and drowsiness, making it vital to follow guidelines that come with capsules and not exceed one-a-day dosage.

Research from 2010 has suggested that lavender oil is safe to use for the relief of anxiety. However, one report acknowledges that long-term studies demonstrating safety are lacking, while another suggests the evidence is lacking on lavender essential oil for specific types of anxiety, such as panic and phobic disorders.

It’s important to receive a doctor or healthcare professional’s advice when considering treatments for mental health conditions. Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.

In addition to its sweet, floral smell, lavender has therapeutic and medical benefits. These include reducing symptoms of anxiety.

Various research indicates that lavender can help reduce anxiety levels and can be used in a variety of ways, including massage, aromatherapy, baths, décor, or in recipes.

Talk to your doctor or a healthcare professional before using lavender for anxiety symptoms.
